LMA2 Demo Postmortem

Hey all,

Whew! (takes deep breath). Now that the demo for LMA2 is out, I'm happy to report that all the work put in during October was well worth it! The demo is released and I learned alot.

Specifically, I learned alot about MOBILE BUILDS. The previous "Let's MEAT Adam" was for PC/Mac and I never thought I'd ever release a game on Android. There were so many unknowns in my mind, and tbh I wasn't even sure if it was well worth the effort.

  • Do people even WANT to play visual novels on their phone?
  • Do I want to put my game on the GooglePlay store?
  • Should I attempt an iOS build, and if so how do I get it onto the Apple Store?
  • How much censorship do I need to put on a game with explicit gore, sexuality and language? (for Android/IOS stores)
  • How do I author or even package said builds?
  • What are the requirements for having your mobile app on the Android/iOS store? (business bank account, agreements etc)

The good news, is it's good to have friends you can rely on. =) Specially very smart friends, much smarter than yourself, who are in the industry.

I reached out to a good friend and engineer who had done mobile game apps before. An epic Visual Novel Developer in his own right. He had sooo many insights.

Here's what I learned:

  • For  a game with alot of explicit adult content like gore, violence and sexuality...I opted to stay out of the official Android/iOS stores. Having to censor my indie game to that degree, just compromised our vision TOO much. Instead, I opted to host only an Android (APK file) on itch.io.
  • The only way to have a working iOS build that can install into one's iPhone, is to have it on the Apple Store.
  • Even though RenPy can build Android builds, you still need (or someone else) to author it with a special "signature" of sorts. How I understood it, is that it's like an official author name like your stamp.
  • Oof! Ugh! Responsive/Dynamic UI for mobile builds, that can adjust itself based on all the different android screen ratios. What a pain! We decided to letterbox the game for odd resolutions outside of 16:9. We also chose to not use responsive UI, but did go back and make certain buttons and icons bigger.

All in all, it was a great experience! I'm curious to see analytics through my itch.io Dashboard, in time...to see how well the APK build does in terms of downloads. If it's pretty popular, I guess I'll just have to do one for the full release too! =)

Hey Haythem! Sorry for the late reply!

Glad you finished finished but also LOVED the demo. I can't believe you played the demo twice! (checking to see what happens if you pick diff options huh). That makes me so happy!

Tad will be fav to a few/many an LMA2 player I'm sure. He has that whole daddy authoritarian vibe to him, which I'm sure certain folks are into. ^_^   He has a big role in LMA2's story, so don't worry! You'll interact with him alot. lol

happy to hear a d thank you for the reply I found the first part by accident and I loved it but this look really promising u had such an amazing glow up I really can't wait to play it lol

Loved the Demo! I already loved the first LMA game for its plot and art, and now I'm excited for how this one is gonna turn out. It already looked more polished than the previous one art-wise!  I look forward to a ride with puzzles and plot-twists, and some spicy stuff ;). Well hopefully it's not too much gore tho since the scene from the last game where the action is happening beneath a blood bath still haunts my memory... and the guillotine scene in the trailer is giving me bad flashbacks

Hi JRay! Awww, thank you for stopping by to leave a comment! I'm so glad that you loved the demo for LMA2 and that it meets your expectations as a fan of the original. I don't wanna give away TOO much, but although I find LMA2 to be more slowburn horror, it does contain all those things you mentioned hoping for. ^_^

As for the gore...well...lol.

Anyways, glad you paused the trailer for the guillotine scene! It cuts so fast, I was wondering if/how many ppl would do just that.

FiiIINnnEEee, if it comes down to a bloody mess I'll resort to cover my eyes...... hopefully at a time I can use both hands.

I paused at the guillotine scene for dat ass actually but instead noticed the guillotine lol.

Anyhoo keep the great work!

Ah hahaha, of course you paused it for that reason. lol ;)

And yeah don't worry you can cover your eyes. What I tried to do is make sure the gore was depicted through very stylized or cinematic framing. The goal being that although the content is gruesome, the overall aesthetic is so pleasing that it'll repulse but also mesmerize. Instead of just...yeah...causing repulsion. lol

Since this is an all new Adam I take it that we don't need to have knowledge of your first games "Adam* correct?  Also thanks for the Android addition!

Hi VampiricKnight! You're correct in that this is pretty much an all new and self-contained story. It has nods to the original, but I wouldn't say that you'd miss out. I'd recommend having played the original or at least it's demo, just for kicks. =)

Thank you for the question! And yes the Android build has been surprisingly popular! Actually, in downloads, it's beating the Mac version. Which I never would've expected tbh

Can RenPy build for Web? So, that way it can open in a browser and you could play the same build on any platform.

Hi Art! From what I can tell, it can build for web. Tbh I've never used that option before. I could be wrong, but I think web builds must also be non-commercial. I'll have to look into it. But thx for the suggestion! =)
